Interstellar is and will always be a polarizing movie. People will either love it or hate it. I, for one, really liked the movie.
I would give the first act a 90%, the second act a 100%, and the third act a 5%. Averaged, this would be a 65% total, though I feel like I liked it way better than that.
I have not stopped thinking about this movie since I saw it. It was so incredibly ambitious and fun to watch, it is hard to say that it was not an amazing movie. So, here are the pros and cons.
Pros:
- It was so amazingly ambitious and large in scale. Because of this, it was so engaging, that it kept my attention the whole movie.
- The cinematography was stunning, and it was really fun to see it on the big screen. It made it really believable, and it felt real.
- The music was incredible, as it always is, because it was done by Hans Zimmer.
- The acting was very well done, and the movie overall was well cast. Even Anne Hathaway was good, and she usually drives me crazy.
- The science in the movie (for the most part), though it may not all be spot on, was approached in such a way that it felt very believable. The theory of relativity was used in a way unlike anything I have ever seen on screen, and it was extremely entertaining.
- Matt Damon was in it, despite it having been marketed without him.
- Overall, it was just plain entertaining, and I couldn't look away.
Cons:
- There is a scene in the movie that every person will immediately recognize as one of the most confusing, trippy, crazy, "what the heck?!" type scenes of any movie ever made. The explanation in this scene, and the fact that this scene was the movie's big reveal, was extremely disappointing. I can think of at least 10 ways off of the top of my head that would have been a more satisfying ending. It really left many viewers with a bitter taste in their mouths. The movie all seemed very realistic and plausible until that part, and it really seemed like the screen writers had been on an acid trip when they wrote it.
- The screen writers did an incredible job with the first 2/3 of the movie, and then it seems like they painted themselves into a corner, and tried their best to explain their way out with something totally crazy.
- A big build up that had a huge part in the movie was the reunion between the father and daughter, and when it finally happened, the daughter all but kicked the father out of the room, even though she was happy to see him. Wouldn't he be excited to meet all of his grandkids? That just doesn't make any sense.
Honestly, there was not too much else that bothered me about this movie besides the last 1/3! If I had just stopped watching right before he went into the black hole, I would have given the movie a 95%-100%. But, as one critic said, it is more entertaining to watch Christopher Nolan fail than it is to watch other directors succeed.
